A PROJECT to encourage youngsters and the wider community to welcome this year's Tour de Yorkshire to the Worth Valley is being backed by a parish council.
Oxenhope Parish councillors voted to provide £500 to help fund a large, roadside display which will be visible to spectators and competitors when the race passes through Oxenhope on May 6.
Councillor Russell Brown is leading the initiative, which is designed to give young people hands-on experience of using tools by involving them in the construction of the display.
He said that in addition to the main installation, which will comprise seven-foot high letters spelling out "Oxenhope" off Hebden Bridge Road, there will be smaller, colourful, hand painted Yorkshire Roses which will be visible elsewhere along the route of the race.
Responding to a query from Cllr Derrick Hopkinson, Cllr Brown confirmed it should be possible to re-use the large Oxenhope sign in future once this year's Tour de Yorkshire is over.
