PEOPLE will soon be able to begin entering the quirkiest event on the Worth Valley's programme of summer entertainments.

Entries for the Oxenhope Straw Race will open from April 1, and the 2018 race takes place on Sunday July 1.

The event, which each year raises money for a variety of charities and other good causes, sees teams completing the two and a half mile course around Oxenhope – often in fancy dress – whilst carrying a bale of straw and visiting each of the local pubs in the village for a drink of beer.

Super hero costumes are a popular choice with competitors each year, with imaginative outfits also inspired by comedy legends, cartoons and other themes.

The event started 43 years ago and has raised about £450,000 since it began.

A total of 218 teams took part in 2017, raising a sum of £11,150 which was handed out to organisations at a presentation last November.
