SUTTON children whipped up a storm as they staged the classic Shakespearean play The Tempest.

Years three and four children from the village’s Community Primary School performed the play at Glusburn Institute to celebrate Shakespeare Week.

The musical version of the classic play gave the youngsters opportunities for enriching encounters with the Bard’s work.

Some of the rehearsals took part in local woods as part of the pupils’ regular outdoors lessons.

Deputy head Jill Fletcher said the twisting tale was set on an island, following a dramatic shipwreck, where lived Prospero and his daughter Miranda.

She said: “Prospero, a powerful magician, is really the outcast Duke of Milan, and he is plotting revenge on his evil brother.

“Also wandering the isle are the rebellious slave Caliban and the loyal sprite Ariel; a group of shipwrecked noblemen; two hilarious bungling servants; handsome Prince Ferdinand; and the Spirits, always ready to sing a song or tell a story, or laugh at the soppy lovers.

“It was the best Sutton CP production I have ever seen! The audience was wowed by the confident acting and strong singing. The entire cast should be very proud of their outstanding performance.”
