HOMES were evacuated in Steeton today following the discovery of an unexploded First World War bomb.

Police were alerted at 11.15am after the device was found in an outbuilding at Summerhill Drive.

An exclusion zone was put in place and residents in 20 neighbouring houses evacuated.

A bomb disposal team was called in and carried out a controlled explosion in a nearby field.

Police said residents were evacuated for about three hours.
