HOUSEHOLDERS and businesses in South Craven are being warned to be on their guard against cold-calling 'asphalt gangs'.

North Yorkshire Trading Standards and highways bosses issued the message after reports of people being targeted.

The rogue workmen claim to be from the county council and that they have surplus material to fill potholes in drives and private roads.

In previous incidents where work has been carried out, the gangs have often subsequently demanded more money than the price quoted.

County Councillor Andrew Lee, executive member for Trading Standards, said: "Whilst a large amount of work is being undertaken currently by the council to improve the road network, residents should be aware that contractors working on behalf of the authority would never approach individuals or businesses with the aim of selling their services.

"We will do all we can to protect residents from those who offend in this way."

Anyone with information about such work being offered, or who has had work completed by cold-callers in the past month, is urged to contact Trading Standards on 03454 040506 and ask for the investigations and safeguarding team.
