A KEIGHLEY man will travel to Greece at the end of this month to help migrants stuck in a camp on the outskirts of Athens.

Sajjad Sadiq, from Knowle Park, will be making the journey with his Accrington-based brother-in-law Shahid Zaman on April 30.

The pair plan to go to Skaramagas Refugee camp, which is temporary home to thousands of people from places such as Syria, Afghanistan, Kurdistan and Pakistan.

Mr Sadiq said: "Some of these people have been stuck there for a long time.

"Because countries such as Hungary, Macedonia and Bulgaria have closed their borders they can't go any further into Europe, and they can't go back.

"It's a difficult situation for everyone involved, including the Greek government which has already had to deal with a major recession and now this on top.

"Thanks to the government and different NGOs the people in the camp are being looked after a bit better than the migrants outside Calais.

"But they still face a very uncertain future, and more than half of the population of the camp is made up of children."

Mr Sadiq and Zaman are welcoming donations, which they will put towards buying provisions for the camp residents once they reach Athens.

Mr Sadiq added: "We're going to be working alongside the NGOs that are already there, and we'd be grateful for any donations people are willing to provide.

"But mainly we'll be there to make contacts and research what the conditions are like, so once we've returned we can begin arranging for a big container full of goods to be sent to the camp."

Mr Sadiq has previously travelled to France to help destitute migrants in and around Calais, and has also organised an Easter food kitchen for homeless people at Keighley's Hainworth Wood Community Centre.

This Keighley kitchen will be operating again at the same community centre from 10am to 2pm on Sunday April 29.
