KEIGHLEY Cricket Club used a field down Dalton Lane until 1869, when it moved to Lawkholme, with the Keighley Rugby League Club acquiring adjoining land in 1885.

Here, around the turn of the 19th century, is what looks like a less formal game being played in a homelier field.

The houses left of centre formed the tiny hamlet of Lawk Holme, which gave its name to this area.

Lawkholme Lane, bounded by a new-looking wall, runs from the right across the middle of this view to meet Hard Ings Road.

The cricket and football grounds lie just off the photograph on the left, placing this sports field near the site of the present McDonald’s restaurant.

Trees in Victoria Park dominate the right-hand background, though this semi-rural view was soon to be built over.
