MANORLANDS fundraisers have been out and about congratulating some of the superstars from this year’s BigK 10k.

The run and walk, including a 5k version, is on course to coin-in more than £50,000 for the Oxenhope Sue Ryder hospice once all sponsorship money has been collected.

Nearly 1,000 people took part in the March event, which followed a multi-terrain route around the town.

Community fundraiser Harriet Wood has met-up with one of the stars.

Leo Baker, who is just eight, scooped the accolade for the most raised by an individual.

He participated in the 5k and coined-in a whacking £780.

Leo was running in memory of his grandad, Russ Fearnley, who received care from Manorlands.

BigK veteran Dave Belmont was back and among the prizes again, but this time with a new team.

The former Acorn Stairlifts worker returned with Birstall-based Morses Club, where he is now company secretary.

He and his colleagues together raised more than £4,500 and took the accolade for the group or business raising the most.

It was the fist time Morses Club had entered the event.

Mr Belmont said: “I have taken part in the Keighley BigK 10k for the last few years so was delighted when a dozen of my colleagues at Morses Club agreed to travel from their homes throughout West Yorkshire in order to brave the hills of Keighley!

“To raise more than £4,500 in our first year was especially pleasing.

“Everyone enjoyed taking part and remarked how friendly the stewards and spectators were.

“Morses Club is looking forward to entering even more teams next year.”

The prize for fastest team went to debutant Mastabs restaurant, which completed the course in just under 53 minutes.

Quickest team in the 5k was Bingley Juniors, led by Richard Holmes.

It also won a trophy for most participants – nearly 100.

The team raised over £1,000.

Another youth football club that shone in the event was Oakworth Juniors, led by Nigel Smith.

More than 70 players and parents took part, together coining-in £1,540.

A special recognition award went to Andy King and Stevie Cutler, who took part in memory of Stevie’s dad.

The pair raised £2,178 through the event and have gone on to generate further funds.

Regular participant Keighley Amateur Boxing Club took part again and collected the award for fastest sports club, with Stephen Kennedy at the helm.

Manorlands community fundraising manager, Andrew Wood, went to meet the team and received a cheque for over £1,000.

He said: “Once again the club turned out in force and supported both the 10k and 5k.

“We’re very grateful to the club for its support over the years and a big thank-you goes to all the team members for raising such a fantastic amount.”

Accolade for the highest team total went to Big Fam, which coined-in £2,360.

And an award for the GP practice with most participants went – for the second year running – to Bingley Medical Practice. The team, headed-up by Mike Francis, raised almost £1,000.

Manorlands fundraiser Liv Moffat is appealing to people who took part in the event to submit any outstanding sponsorship money.

“The event went really well this year and we just want to urge runners to send in their sponsorship,” she said.

“If it was raised online through JustGiving or Virgin Money Giving, then do not worry – it comes straight through to us.”

Money can be dropped-off at the hospice or sent as a cheque – made payable to Sue Ryder Manorlands Hospice – to Manorlands, Keighley Road, Oxenhope BD22 9HJ.
