BRITISH heroes from history are being celebrated in a competition staged by an MP.

Schoolchildren are invited to write about or draw a historic figure they admire, and explain why.

The competition has been organised by Shipley MP Philip Davies and is open to pupils at primary and secondary schools across his constituency, which includes Cullingworth and Denholme.

Entries should be submitted via schools.

Judges will include the Home Secretary, Sajid Javid.

Prizes include two first-class tickets for the Virgin East Coast line, a family ticket for the Harry Potter World Studio Tour and a signed Yorkshire cricket shirt.

The competition runs until June 29 and winners will be announced at the end of the summer term.

Mr Davies said: "The My British Hero competition is designed to unite everyone in pride for our country and to celebrate all of those extraordinary people who have gone before us that have made our country great."
