THE SUTTON-based KVU Singers are teaming up with a leading soloist for a concert in Colne.

The long-established choir will host the concert appearance by Sir John Tomlinson at the town’s Municipal Theatre on June 17.

Tomlinson, an award-winning bass-baritone singer, has been exciting audiences around the world on the operatic stage and in concert halls for more than 40 years.

He has sung at the world’s leading opera houses, including regular appearances with the Royal Opera, the English National Opera and at the Bayreuth Festival.

In 2014 Sir John was awarded the Royal Philharmonic Society Gold Medal, joining the illustrious company of Brahms, Delius, Elgar, Daniel Barenboim, Dame Janet Baker and Placido Domingo.

The Oswaldtwistle singer is performing with the KVU Singers as a result of the retirement of its musical director of 35 years – and member of 60 years – Frank Smith.

The award-winning choir wanted to celebrate Frank’s service to music by performing two concerts with soloists of his choice.

Last year the KVU Singers performed at Kings Hall, Ilkley, with the celebrated King’s Singers, and invited Sir John to perform at the second.

John and the choir will be joined on the concert stage in Colne by up-and-coming local mezzo-soprano Samantha Oxborough.
