PEOPLE concerned about the future of a popular part of St Ives Country Estate, near Harden, have been invited to a public tour of the area.

Andrew Cutts, assistant trees and woodland manager for Bradford Council, will be at Betty's Wood to guide people through plans to revive it following extensive tree felling work to contain a disease.

The tour has been organised by the Friends of St Ives.

Group chairman Pam Laking explained: "Andrew will lead a walk around Betty's Wood to talk to people about the felling, why it happened and plans for the future of the woodland.

"People will be able to find out how they can help, and about chances to have memorial trees for loved ones.

"They can also ask questions and see some of the new growth that's already coming though."

Hundreds of non-native larch trees had to be removed from the wood to prevent the further spread of a disease called phytophthora ramorum which kills a variety of species.

The felling finished early this year, and a range of native species will be planted later in 2018, including oak, disease resistant elm and indigenous blossoming trees, to begin the wood's recovery.

The public tour led by Mr Cutts takes place at 6pm on Wednesday June 20. People should meet at the lower car park, directly below the wood.
