KEIGHLEY charity volunteers were among a team distributing £70,300 worth of aid to Rohingya refugees driven out of Burma.

Razaq Hussain and Aroj Ali, from the 1 Vision group, spent 10 days in Bangladesh, helping people in overcrowded refugee camps close to the Burmese border.

They were accompanied by Kashif Khan from Bradford, Asif Nazir from Oldham and Hamza Khan from Luton, as well as by a team from main sponsor, the company Mr Compensator.

1 Vision had collected £62,800 in the UK before leaving on the aid trip on June 1, and raised another £7,500 in a live appeal while in Bangladesh.

Mr Hussain, a Keighley-based businessman, said the cash was used to buy 20,000 Ramadan evening meals, 1,500 large family food packs and 750 Eid gift packs.

This was the third time 1 Vision has travelled to Bangladesh to support the Rohingya. Roughly 800,000 people from this minority have been forced out their homes in neighbouring Burma due to a brutal campaign of ethnic cleansing.

Mr Hussain said: "The camps were even more crowded than when we were last there, and the monsoon weather is very bad. Once it starts raining it doesn't stop for 24 hours.

"The UN is providing a lot of rice and lentils, so what's needed now is protein and everyday items, which is what we'll concentrate on next time.

"We're planning to hold a football tournament on July 1 at Marley to raise money for the same cause." Visit 1 Vision's Facebook page for details.
