A SOLSTICE Saunter in aid of Manorlands was a huge success.

The annual event, on the Bolton Abbey estate, attracted 700 participants.

And it is estimated that nearly £20,000 – several thousand pounds more than last year – was raised.

All proceeds go to the Oxenhope Sue Ryder hospice.

The saunter, organised by the Airedale Dodgers running club, followed a five-mile trail route around the estate.

Runners headed from the Cavendish Pavilion to Barden Bridge and then back on the other side of the river.

All finishers received a jammy dodger in tribute to the organisers, a bottle of bespoke Solstice Saunter beer produced by Bridgehouse Brewery and a medal.

The first man home was last year’s winner, Will Kerr, in 30 minutes 13 seconds.

First woman to finish was Emma Stoney, who completed the route in 37 minutes 24.

The event – sponsored by Skipton-based JB Springs – was held on the summer solstice, on Thursday.

“This was the third Solstice Saunter and it has become extremely popular,” said Andrew Wood, community fundraising manager at Manorlands.

“There were a lot of people doing it as their first-ever run and there was a fantastic atmosphere.

“Plus it was a glorious evening weather-wise.

“Airedale Dodgers did a terrific job with the organising once again and I would like to thank them.

“Special mention should also be made of Keighley Scout Service Team, which managed the road closures, and Raynet for the communications.

“And a big thank-you to our sponsor JB Springs, all those who gave their support and of course everybody who took part.

“We were delighted with how it went.”

The evening was also used to promote the next running event for Manorlands, at the same venue.

The Bolton Abbey Trail Festival takes place on August 19, from 11am.

There will be several distance options to cater for all abilities – two miles, 10k, a half-marathon, 15 miles and 20 miles.

All participants will receive a medal.

“Most of the routes take in the trails of Barden Moor where the late-summer heather should be in full bloom,” said Mr Wood.

“It is a chance for the whole family to come along, stay for the day and enjoy other activities on offer in the festival village.”

And on November 11, the second Run Bolton Abbey takes place.

Routes on offer will include a 10k, ten miles, a half-marathon and fun run.

All start and finish at the Cavendish Pavillion car park and there will be chip timing.

Each finisher will receive a medal.

The course is a mixture of paths, tracks, woodland trails and open land.

More than 1,300 runners took part in last year’s event, which raised nearly £30,000 for the hospice.
