THE KVU Singers will host their annual Young Musicians Concert next week in Skipton.

The Sunday July 1 family concert, which rounds off the Sutton choir’s summer season, will feature four boys from the North of England making a name for themselves with their particular instruments.

A spokesman said: “The KVU Singers will perform a wide variety of music, conducted by their effervescent musical director, Frank Smith, but the afternoon will really belong to four extremely talented local young performers.”

Han Zhao, who specialises in piano, organ and viola, was formerly a pupil at Bradford Grammar School and is now a music scholar at Eton College.

He started learning the piano at age of four with Dame Fanny Waterman, and with her help successfully auditioned for a music scholarship at Eton College three years ago.

Ben Finlay began learning the cello at the age of seven and went on to play in several orchestras including the National Children’s Orchestra of Great Britain and the City of Leeds Youth Orchestra.

His interest in music is not restricted to classical: he plays jazz on piano and bass guitar, and acted as conductor of his school Big Band from 2015-17.

Trumpeter Leo Stemp, age 10, from Bacup, began learning the cornet five years ago with the training band of the 2nd Rossendale Scout Band and is now Principal Solo Cornet in the junior band.

He has also been a member of the senior band for two years has played a solo with them on Radio Lancashire. Matt Johnson is currently studying piano at diploma level at Chethams in Manchester, and won his age group six years running at the Wharfedale Festival.

The concert will be held at Christ Church, Skipton, on July 1 at 2.30pm. Tickets cost £7, with under-16s free. Call 01535 653009 to book tickets.
