A TEENAGE student of Parkside School in Cullingworth hopes to make his mark as a furniture designer.

Year 13 student Jonathan Crabtree, who studies Product Design, was recently awarded the Furniture Makers’ Company’s school design prize.

He was presented with a certificate and Design of the 20th Century book by The Furniture Makers’ Company, which is the furnishing industry’s charity.

He received the accolade for innovative furniture design during his final portfolio work.

Jonathan will now be entered into the Schools Design Competition and his work, if selected, will be exhibited in London in October.

The School Design Prize, now in its fifth year, is given to promising students in each school across the country. Each school’s design and technology teacher chooses the male and female student who has created the most outstanding coursework linked to furnishing.

The Furniture Makers’ Company said that because the UK furnishing industry had an ageing workforce, the industry’s long-term prosperity depended on attracting young people to sue a career in the “creative, vibrant” sector.
