CHURCHES of Keighley put on a well-attended party in the town centre.

The event earlier this month (July 14) enjoyed very sunny weather and attracted hundreds of members of the public.

The occasion in Church Green on July 14 featured live music, a free barbecue, a bouncy castle, activities for children and a space for people from across the town to come together.

A spokesman for the organisers said: “It was a beautiful, sunny day and it is thought that more than a thousand people came along to enjoy the event.

“The whole of Church Green was filled with marquees and activities, and all of this was laid on for free. “Families with children enjoyed the face painting and crafts, others sat and chatted with friends while listening to the live music and all were invited to enjoy the free barbecue.

“Keighley town mayor Councillor Fulzar Ahmed and MP John Grogan opened the party and both spoke positively of the friendly atmosphere and the positive role of the churches in Keighley.

“The event was run by a large team of volunteers from across many different churches in Keighley and we were delighted with the turnout and atmosphere on the day.”

Reverend Mike Cansdale of Keighley Parish explained the vision behind the event.

“We believe that God loves Keighley and as churches we are committed to serving this community,” he said.

“This was a great event full of hope, friendship and a practical demonstration of the love of God.”

Keighley town chaplain the Rev Dr Jonathan Pritchard said: “At a time like this when there are pressures that seek to divide our communities it is so important that we create space to bring people together.

“There was a lovely atmosphere as Keighley came out to celebrate in the sunshine.”

Ben Cotterill, of Keighley’s branch of the Salvation Army, said: “There is a great spirit of unity amongst the churches and a common desire to be a blessing to this town.

“It was brilliant to be able to offer this welcome to everybody and we want to thank all the volunteers who made it possible.”

Among those who enjoyed the party was 40-year-old Ingrow-based mum of three, Gemma Stirling.

“It’s been a great day, and I appreciate the effort put in by the organisers,” she said.

“We don’t always get such long, hot summers, so I’m glad someone is making the most of it by holding outdoor parties like this.”
