THE MUSICAL version of hit film and play Calendar Girls is returning to the Grand Theatre in Leeds.

This time it has the original title rather than The Girls, the name it went under for its sell-out premiere tour in autumn 2015.

Calendar Girls The Musical, written by Take That star Gary Barlow and leading scriptwriter Tim Firth, can be seen in Leeds from August 16 to September 1.

Based on the true story of Yorkshire’s own WI Calendar Girls, the production features Fern Britton, Anna-Jane Casey, Sara Crowe, Ruth Madoc, Rebecca Storm, Denise Welch and Karen Dunbar.

The show was inspired by a group of women who stripped off and posed naked (but for carefully placed buns, teapots and other such props) for a Women’s Institute calendar.

The musical expands on the original play comedy to show the women’s life in a Yorkshire village; how the story began, the effect on husbands, sons and daughters, and how a group of ordinary women achieved something extraordinary.

Tim Firth said: “To be given a chance to revisit Calendar Girls The Musical is a unique opportunity. Gary and I have been working away and, as the great Stephen Sondheim said, ‘musical comedies aren’t written, they are rewritten’.”
