A CIVIC leader dropped in to see disabled Keighley children during their summer sports camp.

Councillor Peter Corkindale, Keighley’s deputy mayor, officially launched this year’s week of activities at University Academy Keighley.

He joined in activities such as ribbon twirling at the session organised for eight to 25-year-olds by Bradford Disability Sports and Leisure.

Participants ranged from young children with learning disabilities taking part for the first time, to teenage horse rider TJ who is representing Britain at the Special Olympics World Games in Abu Dhabi next year.

Cllr Corkindale said: “I was bowled over. Everyone does a brilliant job and everyone was impressed with the young people’s enthusiasm. This group is training the next generation of Special Olympic athletes.” those aged from eight to 25.

BDSL is running a fortnight of sports activities in Keighley and Bradford, including cycling, cricket, football, athletics, multi-sports, sailing and kayaking.

The season ends on Friday, August 10, with a day of water activities at the Doe Park outdoor adventure centre, next to the reservoir in Denholme.
