AN MP is backing a summer jobs campaign aimed at students.

Philip Davies says there are currently more than 100 vacancies across the district, ranging from summer hospitality staff to retail assistants and support workers.

He added that the posts were separate to full-time employment vacancies, with most focussing on shorter-term contracts and part-time shifts which can be juggled with higher education.

"Not only can people earn some money to help them with their studies but they also get used to the world of work and learn a different set of skills than the ones education teaches," said Mr Davies, whose Shipley constituency includes Cullingworth and Denholme.

"Part-time employment is a great way to gain experience and I know from my previous retail work that employers do take notice of it on a CV.

"It is important to offer young people opportunities to experience new roles and try out potential jobs, but it does not detract from the drive to create more permanent jobs for people."

Figures show that the number of young people taking on part-time or summer jobs has fallen by more than 60 per cent since 1980.
