A HUSBAND will mount his bike to take on 300 miles in aid of the charity that supported his wife after she was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Stuart Hall, from Whitefield, is gearing up to undertake Cancer Research UK's new fundraising campaign, Cycle 300, which is encouraging people to take to the saddle to cycle a total of 300 miles throughout September.

Mr Hall's wife Carolyn was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2012 after funding a lump on her right breast.

Following tests at North Manchester Hospital and the devastating diagnosis, Mrs Hall had a mastectomy and reconstructive surgery.

The mum-of-two who runs her own conference, event and hotel booking agency also underwent chemotherapy treatment at The Christie which was successful.

Mrs Hall, aged 46, said: “It was a terrible shock when I was diagnosed with cancer — it was like being in a bad dream. I never thought it would happen to me."

One in two people born after 1960 in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer at some point in their lifetime, according to Cancer Research UK.

The charity is urging people to get behind their latest fundraising initiative to help raise money and awareness.

Participants can choose their own cycle routes and pace, include their daily cycling commutes, their epic weekend cycles, spin classes or otherwise, to hit their 300-mile target.

Mr Hall, aged 52 who works as an improvement analyst, said: "Cycle 300 is the perfect opportunity to combine all benefits of cycling, the thrill of a physical challenge and the fantastic sense of achievement from raising money for a great cause, all at the same time."

Jane Bullock, Cancer Research UK representative for Greater Manchester, said: “We are very grateful to Stuart and Carolyn for their support and hope it will start a chain-reaction, sparking the interest of cyclists of all ages and abilities.

“You can sign up to Cycle 300 on your own or make it more social by challenging family, friends and colleagues to join you. It’s a fantastic opportunity to commit to a healthy challenge now, so you have something to aim for in September.

“Everyone who participates in Cycle 300 will be supporting the efforts of doctors, nurses and scientists working on the front line against cancer."
