PLAY Day came to Parkwood for the fourth year running, and families had a whale of a time.

The recreation ground on Parkwood Street was again the focus of activities that attracted around 200 people.

The local residents enjoyed a mix of stalls and traditional fete games like tug-of-war, egg-and-spoon race, three-legged race organised by residents and NCS

The celebration of play was again organised and funded by Keighley Big Local, the regeneration body run by volunteer residents, with support from the National Citizens Service.

Also invited to get involved were Get Out More Forest Schools and the Street Club Play Rangers.

Highlights included a tug-of-war between Parkwood residents and teenage members of the National Citizens Service.

There was a popular spoon-puppet making workshop that involved Judy Connor.

And Malcolm Slater, one of the Bradford councillors representing Keighley East award, rode a smoothie bike as part of an activity organised by community group HALE.

The bike had blender on the front filled to the brim with fruit, and riders had to pedal for one minute to make a smoothie.

The fruit was supplied by Morrisons community champion Nicola McGiunniss.

Keighley Big Local volunteer Fiona Thompson, who took all the photographs, said: “It was great to see so many people come together.”

Keighley Big Local coordinator Shaun O’Hare agreed, adding: “There was great involvement by residents and an emerging ‘Friends of’ group for Parkwood.

“Residents set up a hook-a-duck stall, a sweet stall and a tombola, all the while raising funds for a Christmas event on the park.

“Local resident DJ Beefy provided the tunes on the day, and GEM Compliance Training offered free first aid demonstrations.”

Residents were invited to take part in the Family Jam, joining a band of curious characters on stage to help to create a musical show.

Shaun added: “The Family Jam went on way to the event finished because the children did not want them to leave.”
