ACTION has been demanded to repair a Steeton road and pavements left “looking like Beirut” by the building of a housing estate.

Parish council chairman David Mullen is backing a resident’s call for developer Redrow to resurface the stretch of Thornhill Road damaged while the Manor Field estate was being constructed.

Redrow this week pledged to “make good” any damage caused to surrounding streets and said it was discussing the scope of work with the authorities.

Bob Smithies, who lives directly opposite the only access to the estate, claims contractors damaged his garden wall and flattened his pavement by parking, turning or backing their heavy vehicles.

And he says the pavement was left an ugly patchwork of tarmac when several utility companies carried out small-scale resurfacing after digging holes to connect mains supplies to Manor Fields.

Cllr Mullen, who lives further down Thornhill Road, described the road surface as “like driving in Beirut” and said he had raised the issue with Bradford Council.

He said: “It’s a real mess with lots of potholes where contractors have dug holes and not backfilled them. When winter comes and we get some frost, it’s going to crack everything up.

“The pavement has ruts four inches deep, where people have parked their four-tonne lorries, between Halsteads Way and the entrance to Manor Fields.

“Every one of Redrow’s lorries went down Thornhill Road because it was the only access. That’s why we originally asked for the construction site access to be from the other side at Steeton Grove.”

Mr Smithies said the problem was particularly bad in front of his house, which was on the corner Thornhill Road immediately opposite the Manor Fields entrance.

He said: “There are broken pavements that were damaged by the wagons reversing. The pavements are uneven and the edging stones have been broken.

“The pavements have been dug up and resurfaced where they had to connect services up to the estate. It’s a bodged-up mess.

Mrs Smithies said he had endured such problems for several years.

David Faraday, technical director for Redrow Homes (Yorkshire), said: “Redrow is committed to building responsibly and we will make good any damage caused to the highway as a result of our development.

“We are currently in the process of agreeing the scope of works on Thornhill Road with the highways inspector.”
