DICK Whittington is making a return to Oakworth.

Twenty years after last featuring as the village's Methodist pantomime, the production is being reprised – with a new script and a 29-strong cast of young people.

And the audience is promised an action-packed adventure – with "stunning" scenery, special effects, costumes and routines.

A spokesperson said: "According to legend, Dick Whittington is based on a true story which happened way back in the 14th century.

"A poor scullion found work and shelter in the house of Sir Ivor Fitzwarren, a prosperous London merchant who ran a large general store. In time, Dick was so successful he became one of the richest merchants in the city. He later married his former employer’s daughter, Alice, whom he had fallen in love with many years before. In 1397 he was proclaimed Lord Mayor of London, an honour which he accepted no less than three times.

"In our version of the pantomime, Alderman Fitzwarren is away on business when Dick arrives in London and Fitzwarren’s store is being managed by his wife, Lady Fiona, with the assistance of Alice and comic duo Sarah Suet the cook and shop assistant Idle Jack. Dick befriends Tommy the Cat and Lady Fiona agrees to take on Dick to help in the shop and Tommy to help keep the rats at bay. After a successful start, Dick is accused of robbing the safe and leaves London in disgrace. However, Fairy Bow-Bells ensures Dick returns to London and his innocence is proved.

"Further comedy is provided by Captain Cockle of the Pickled Herring, along with his first mate, bosun and bosun’s mate, as everyone sets sail to join Alderman Fitzwarren. However, the voyage ends in disaster when King Rat and his Revolting Rats scuttle the ship.

"Our heroes are saved in a fantastic UV underwater scene and safely conveyed to the shores of Morocco. They eventually reach the sultan’s palace, where Dick finally faces King Rat. True love then runs its course as Dick marries Alice.

"Along the way, sailors and citizens all have a chance to shine in their own scenes as well as dazzling us with their song and dance routines."

Dick Whittington is being staged at Oakworth Methodist Church. There are 7pm performances on February 11, 13, 14, 15, 17 and 18, and 2pm matinees both Saturdays.
