A TABLE tennis tournament has been held in tribute to a Keighley firefighter.

Keighley and District Table Tennis League's Jeff Naylor Cup is competed for annually.

But this year's event took on extra resonance, marking four decades since Jeff's death.

The firefighter died in hospital after being badly injured as he and colleagues fought to rescue trapped youngsters from a Keighley house fire in April, 1983.

Keighley Table Tennis Centre hosted the tournament final, in which Haworth Hawks A beat a Ukrainian A.

The Ukrainian team included Pete Johnson, who was a firefighter with Jeff. The two men also played in the same table tennis team.

A league spokesperson said: "It was a really great game with fantastic sportsmanship, played in Jeff's memory.

"Alfie Mawson, an up and coming star of Haworth Hawks who also won the under-18s and overall closed championship at Keighley this year, collected the winners' plate."
