KEIGHLEY Salvation Army has launched its annual Christmas present appeal.

The Be a Star! initiative aims to ensure that no child goes without a gift on Christmas Day.

Bosses at the High Street centre are appealing to the public for donations of new toys, which will be distributed in time for the festive season to families struggling to make ends meet.

Centre manager, Penny Southgate, says the Christmas period can be the toughest time of the year for many – and it's feared more people than ever will need support this year.

She praises the community for its response to previous appeals, and urges it to rally round once again.

"Keighley is an amazing town that always pulls together to support local people," she says.

"Last year we distributed gifts to over 450 children.

"The public’s response was overwhelming – from individuals bringing in a selection box or toy, to local groups and businesses arranging toy collections.

"Helping a parent provide a gift for their child is more than just financial support, it brings the joy of Christmas into their home.

"The Salvation Army appeal is an opportunity for people in our communities to embrace the spirit of Christmas and give to families and individuals who have nothing.

"We have been humbled by the public’s generosity over the years and hope that this year our appeal will be able to bring some comfort and joy to those in the community who are struggling the most.

"We've seen the devastating effect of the cost-of-living crisis. People are really struggling, and so we are doing what we can to relieve the pressure this Christmas.

"We'll sort and distribute the gifts to children and families in the area through local groups, schools and social services.

"If any local businesses, groups, shops, churches or schools would like to get involved, please email keighley@salvationarmy.org.uk. We cannot do it without you! If you could offer to be a drop-off point, that would be great too."

Gifts should be unwrapped and suitable for ages 0-18.

They can be taken to the Salvation Army centre or dropped off at Asda, Morrisons or Sainsbury's supermarkets in Keighley.

The deadline is Thursday, December 7.
