A SCHOOL told four years ago that it 'requires improvement' has now been rated good by Ofsted.

Inspectors visited Wilsden Primary, part of Focus-Trust, over two days in November.

And in its report, the three-strong team has graded the school good overall and across all categories – quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, leadership and management, and early years provision.

Ofsted describes the school as providing "a well-structured curriculum to support pupils’ wider personal development", supported by "well-trained" staff.

It adds that as part of the school's efforts to improve, leaders have developed an "ambitious" curriculum, with care taken to ensure learning is continuous from early years through to Year 6.

Inspectors noted that pupils were "polite and courteous", and a love of reading had been established amongst the children, ensuring that "high-quality literature forms the basis of a reading programme".

The school had introduced a phonics scheme, taught from reception, with pupils using books that matched sounds they'd been taught. As a result, pupils made "excellent" progress, and children who struggled with their reading were well supported.

Pupils enjoyed a range of clubs, activities and projects, and took part in community schemes, such as Wilsden in Bloom, and eco-projects.

Liz Davison, executive headteacher at Wilsden Primary School, welcomed the report's findings.

She added: "I am incredibly proud to lead such a dedicated group of staff and children, who have worked so hard and thoroughly deserve this recognition.

"I would like to also acknowledge the great support from parents, governors and our team at Focus-Trust."

Darren Webb, the school's chair of governors, says: "This grading is a major step forward on a journey for Wilsden Primary School which has seen invaluable input from the staff, pupils, parents, governors and trust.

"All have the same aim and are pulling in the same direction, and after what seems like an age, the efforts are seeing reward.

"Everyone involved is rightly proud of this recognition of our achievements, but still cognisant that there is much more to do in order to develop further."

In areas for improvement identified by the inspectors, they said the school should ensure work given to pupils is consistently matched to their current knowledge and understanding. And there should be consistent expectations of behaviour in all lessons, understood by pupils.

Focus-Trust is a charitable primary school trust based in the West Yorkshire region and north-west of England.
