SOME schools in the Bradford district have been forced to close or open later over dangerously icy conditions.

Temperatures in many areas of the Bradford district dropped below zero degrees overnight and will struggle to exceed 1 degrees Celsius today (January 18).

An amber cold weather alert, issued by the UK Health Security Agency, remains in place in Yorkshire until midday tomorrow.

One school announced it had made the "difficult decision" to close while another said even "patches of grit have frozen over".

Holy Family Catholic School

Holy Family Catholic School on Spring Gardens Lane, Keighley, described its site and surrounding routes as "currently treacherous underfoot".

All learning today will be done remotely.

The school is expected to reopen as normal tomorrow.

A spokesperson for the school said: "The school site and surrounding routes are currently treacherous underfoot.

"We have taken the difficult decision to close the school for safety reasons.

"All learning will be remote and can be accessed via ClassCharts.

"We expect to reopen as normal on Friday."

Riddlesden St Mary's CofE Primary School

Riddlesden St Mary's CofE Primary School on Grange Road, Riddlesden, will be opening to most pupils at 10am today, but its nursery and after school club is closed.

A school spokesperson said: "We have completed another risk assessment of the grounds this morning and we have made the decision to have another delayed opening at 10am. Patches of our grit have frozen over.

"Nursery (frogs class) will be closed today due to difficulties with access. After school club will also be closed this evening.

"The playground is still unsafe so we will be coming in through the hall again, just like yesterday.

"Please make your way to school safely as pathways on the way to school may be slippery."

Keighley St Andrew's CofE Primary School and Nursery

Keighley St Andrew's CofE Primary School and Nursery is opening later at 10am today due to "severe ice" around the site.

The roads around the school on Lustre Street, Keighley, and its grounds are unsafe, a school spokesperson said.

Clayton St John CofE Primary School

Clayton St John CofE Primary School on Bradford Road, Clayton, will be opening to pupils later at 10am today due to icy conditions around the setting.

A school spokesperson said: "This will allow staff and pupils to get to school safely.

"Care Club is open as usual. 

"Please be careful on your way in to school."

Oldfield Primary School

Oldfield Primary School on Oldfield Lane, Keighley, has announced a full closure today after ice made the surrounding roads too dangerous.

Dixons City Academy

Dixons City Academy on Ripley Street, Bradford, said it is experiencing heating issues so will be open from 10.40am for students today.

A school spokesperson said at around 7.45am: "If students are already at Dixons City Academy we will supervise them in the warmer areas of the school.

"The year 11 art GCSE trip will go ahead as normal."
