A WELL-known former teacher has died aged 91.

Mac Viney taught at the old Highfield and Greenhead schools in Keighley, until retiring through ill health in 1983.

Tadcaster-born Mr Viney always had a love of maths.

He trained as a teacher at Uttoxeter, before returning to Tadcaster in the late 1950s.

Mr Viney moved to Keighley in 1963, and had lived in the town since.

One of his two daughters, Sarah, says: “Whilst travelling into Keighley from North Yorkshire to play hockey at Marley he would pass the cherry trees at Cliffe Castle, the Mechanics Institute, head down Cavendish Street with its Victorian canopy and then on to the sports fields overlooked by Riddlesden – and he just had to move here!”

Mr Viney also served with the Territorial Army, rising to the rank of major.

And he was an active team member of Keighley Bridge Club, playing an instrumental role in the purchase of its first property at Devonshire Street.

“In later life he enjoyed meeting past pupils when he went about his daily routine – for some he will have taught their parents and even grandparents,” says Sarah.

Mr Viney leaves a wife Doreen – a former teacher at Long Lee Primary School – daughters Sarah and Libby, and four grandchildren.

The funeral service is at Oakworth Crematorium on Monday, February 12, at 11.30am.
