The anxious wait is over this morning for hundreds of students across Keighley district.

A-level results are published today and among the first young people to learn their fate were pupils at South Craven School in Cross Hills.

For the fourth year running the pass rate at the school was over 97 per cent. In 25 subjects there was a 100 per cent success rate.

Three students, all of whom want to pursue medical careers, gained four grade As - Susan Peet is going on to study dentistry, Gemma Smith midwifery and Bethany Farnworth hopes to become a vet.

Students with three As are Esther McConnell, who is aiming to be a lawyer; Stephanie Hardy, who will be pursuing art, and Thomas Elstub, who is going to Exeter College, Oxford, to read physics.

As well as the established A-level route, the school also offers a growing number of vocational courses. Chris Snowden, having gained a distinction in his Engineering National Award BTEC, has been sponsored by Bowman Riley Architects in Skipton to study architectural technology at Leeds Metropolitan University.

This year also saw the award of the first A* grades at Advanced Level - these were only available in A/S courses completed in a year - and the new Extended Project Qualification, which allows students to carry out a dissertation in a subject of their choice. Twelve students took this on and three gained A*.

Over 115 students at South Craven will be going on to university.

Head teacher Dr Andrew Cummings said: “We congratulate students and their parents on the results achieved and wish all our students every success for the future.

“I would like to thank the staff on behalf of students and parents for all their hard work and commitment that has led to these excellent results being achieved.”

Students of Parkside School in Cullingworth gained a “fantastic” set of results overall, said Jane Haddani, Director of Post 16.

She said: “Achievement is good across the board and Parkside post-16 students should be proud of themselves.

“Many students have worked hard to retain or exceed the challenging grades set for them.”

Ms Haddani said that although it had not yet been finalised, the school’s value-added score was looking very positive.

She said: “I’m pleased that despite the uncertain economic climate, most of our students are going on to university.

“I am confident they will enjoy even greater success there.”

Oakbank School head teacher Chris Thompson said this year’s A-level scores were up on last year.

He added: “We are always trying to improve. We have pumped more resources into the sixth form – for example a new computer room – and we have quality teaching.

“I am proud of the achievement of the A-level pupils and so are the staff, which was shown by how many turned up to see children get their results.

“The problems predicted this year about pupils not getting on to university courses does not seem to have occurred at Oakbank and we are bucking the trend of pupils taking up science and maths, which increases every year.”

Head of the Keighley school’s sixth form, Mary Leatherbarrow said: “I am very proud of my year 13 - I think they are absolutely wonderful - and I think everyone who wanted a university place has got one.”
