Open day is last in Keighley school's current buildings

Greenhead High School has staged its last open day in its current buildings.

A highlight for prospective students was a display of memorabilia and records dating back to the 18th century.

They were uncovered when cellars were cleared out in advance of the move to buildings currently under construction.

Anita Carrieri, the head of history, and local archivists discovered photographs of former staff, students and Keighley schools dating back to 1872.

There were also old punishment books from the 1970s, exercise books, sporting trophies from the early 1900s and a prayer book dated around 1710 belonging to John Drake, the school founder.

Utilising the archives and photographs, Anita and her team are now working on a special publication chronicling the school’s heritage in the history of education in Keighley since 1713.

Due for release next summer, the book will also celebrate the many changes taking place at Greenhead. The school is bidding to become an academy, sponsored by the University of Bradford.

Anita said: “We would welcome contributions of nostalgia, along with donations and sponsors for the book. All who support the cause are guaranteed a listing in the publication.”

Anita can be contacted on 01535 210333 or via office@greenheadhigh.co.uk.

Open day visitors included prospective parents, along with former teachers and pupils taking the opportunity to walk the school corridors for a final time.

Representatives from the University of Bradford and PLACE – the consultants involved in the planned academy handover – were available to answer questions about the programme.

Greenhead head Trish McCarthy said: “There was a lot of excitement about the changes planned for the future, especially among parents who viewed the plans of our new building.”
