Keighley surgery

A film produced by young people will be shown to professionals in a bid to keep Holycroft doctors’ surgery at its current site.

Bradford and Airedale NHS has unveiled plans to build a health, social and wellbeing centre in Keighley and announced a consultation period at the beginning of this month — partly to determine where the new facility should be based.

It will replace The Oaks Resource Centre, Holycroft Surgery and Keighley Health Centre, either at the existing Holycroft site, on Oakworth Road, or on a bigger patch of land off Bradford Road.

Noreen Hussain, health engagement co-ordinator at the Bangladeshi Community Association (BCA), said that despite 16,000 leaflets being sent out to households, not enough people knew about the proposed changes.

She has organised a meeting at the Bangladeshi Community Centre, on Friday, February 26, at 3.30pm, to be attended by members of the public, healthcare professionals, councillors and Holycroft Primary School’s head teacher.

Ms Hussain said: “According to health statistics, the Holycroft area is in the bottom 5 per cent of health and housing deprivation in the country and we feel strongly that Holycroft Surgery needs to stay where it is to serve that community.

“Leaflets written in English were sent to addresses in the area, but the local communities are mainly Italian, Polish, Bangla and Urdu-speaking, so they do not know about these plans.

“I have ordered leaflets in the correct languages to be sent out but I am also urging people to attend this meeting, find out more and put their ideas forward.”

She added that the BCA Youth Group was in the process of making a video to show at the meeting, expressing why it felt Holycroft Surgery should stay on the same site.

Services at the new centre are set to include a pharmacy, NHS dentist, X-ray and ECG checks and voluntary and community groups are expected to use it.

How short sighted to even consider putting a new health centre down Bradford Road.
1. The elderly of Keighley deserve better than this, how many of them can walk to or beyond Dalton Lane, many would have to get two buses (not everyone has a car)

2. Why is everything being sited to the Bradford Road/Lawkholme area of Keighley, our swimming pool & fitness centre, our Asda, our ambulance, police & fire stations. Now our new college.

3. Has anyone thought of the impact of all this not only on the people of Keighley BUT the obvious traffic problems which this scheme is only going to add to?

The roundabout at The Beeches roundabout is constantly backed up beyond the access roads even with the newly installed lights.

There is only one place which is immediately obvious to an outsider, knock the Damside Disaster down and build on there, this means some services can, if required, be sited on the old Health Centre site.......!

Whilst talking about the Dam Side area, can someone think about our heritage and tidy up the "Walk Keighley" route, behind the sorting office, a beautiful walk, historical and full of wildlife, we have the addition of a beautiful beck running through it...it is overrun with brambles, littered with rubbish and the steps covered in a slimy litchen. Let's get some of the people on Community Service clearing this up.....it is years since it was cleared and again left to fester........it needs clearing on a regular basis.

Come on - we who love Keighley deserve more than this.

Can it now be recognised that the footprint of Keighley is being dictated by blackmail from the residents in this no-go area of the town?
If it is decided that the Bradford Road site is the correct one, how can the powers that be ensure that the
indigenous population can safely use the facilities ??
