Tragedy was narrowly averted after a 13-year-old boy egged on by his friends ran out in front of a train.

Police gave the teenager a severe reprimand after they were told about the shocking incident, which happened last Friday, at 2pm, by a concerned Cononley resident.

A woman raised the alarm after a group of youths was seen playing chicken at the level crossing in Cononley.

“The boy ran out in front of an oncoming train after being egged on by his friends and when he got to the other side they all cheered,” said a police spokeswoman. “The boy was later identified and he was given strong words of advice by the police. We cannot emphasise strongly enough just how dangerous this was. It doesn’t bear thinking about what could have happened.”
