A Silsden restaurant has raised £1,100 to help the victims of the Haiti earthquake.

Lazeez Indian Restaurant owner Shokot Ali said he had been inspired to hold a fundraising event after watching shocking television footage of the Haitian people who had lost everything in the aftermath of the earthquake, which killed an estimated 230,000 people.

The restaurant, in Kirkgate, invited customers to partake in a five-course meal during several sittings throughout last Thursday evening, with half the takings going to the Disasters Emergency Committee.

Mr Ali said: “I want to say a big thanks to the residents of Silsden who turned out in force to make the evening a success.
