Silsden has been rocked by the death aged 60 of its town mayor, Councillor Alan Edwards.
Cllr Edwards, who was serving his second term as mayor for Silsden Town Council, died in Bradford Royal Infirmary on Saturday after a battle with cancer.
He leaves two children, Peter, 23, and Emma, 21, who he lived with, his mother Rose and a sister Diane.
Tributes have been pouring in to Cllr Edwards – a councillor for 15 years - on the town’s community website Silsden.net.
Fellow Silsden town councillor Chris Atkinson told us: “Alan was a true gentleman, that is the top and bottom of it. His passing will leave a big hole in council and in Silsden. I could not speak highly enough of him.”
In his time on the council, Cllr Edwards helped to build the John Stanley Bell memorial pool and worked ‘quietly behind the scenes’ as chairman of the planning committee and general purposes committee.
He was also a governor for Aire View Infant and South Craven schools.
Silsden’s deputy mayor Cllr Michael Elsmore said: “The councillors are all very saddened – he did a lot for Silsden.”
His funeral will be held at noon next Wednesday at St James’s Church in Silsden.
Donations will be accepted for Manorlands Hospice.
