A Keighley girl has paid tribute to the brother she lost in Sunday’s horrific car accident on South Street.

Aysha Iqbal hailed 20-year-old brother Sayeed as hard-working, selfless, caring and a great friend to many people.

Sayeed’s death robbed Aysha and her six sisters, who live in Stockbridge, of their only brother.

The former Ilkley Grammar School student, a bank worker, was the driver of a car that crashed into a wall outside Keighley Business Centre.

The Seat Leon failed to negotiate a left-hand bend while being pursued by a police car on South Street at 12.20am.

Sayeed was pronounced dead at the scene and his three teenage passengers were injured.

One of them, a 15-year-old former South Craven School student, yesterday remained in a critical condition at Leeds General Infirmary following a brain operation.

The incident has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

Sayeed’s funeral on Tuesday, at the Emily Street mosque in Lawkholme, was attended by hundreds of local people.

Immediately afterwards Sayeed’s body was flown to Pakistan for burial, accompanied by several family members.

Aysha approached the Keighley News this week to ensure the public knew what Sayeed had been like.

She said: “He was a beautiful brother and son who touched everybody’s lives. No-one had one bad word to say about him.

“He was so privileged, yet he worked so hard. He was selfless, caring and a great friend to so many people, regardless of their age.

“He was taken from us so young but God wanted his angel back.

“Your loving sisters and parents will always have you in their hearts and we will always search for you.”

Sayeed’s former headteacher described him as “pleasant and popular.” Gillian James, headteacher at Ilkley Grammar School, said: “Sayeed left us in 2006, but we remember him well as a very pleasant and popular boy who worked hard and wanted a job in finance.

“It is a tragic loss of young life, and our hearts go out to his family and friends. We hold them in our thoughts and prayers at this very difficult time.”

Keighley councillor Zafar Ali this week described Sayeed’s death as a tragic and terrible incident.

He agreed the crash should be independently investigated to discover what happened and whether it could have been avoided.

An inquest into Sayeed’s death was opened on Tuesday by coroner Roger Whittaker and adjourned pending further inquiries.

Witnesses who saw the crash or the car beforehand should contact West Yorkshire Police on 0845 6060606.
