An emergency operation has been carried out on a 15-year-old boy who was injured in a car crash following a police pursuit in Keighley.

The teenager suffered multiple injuries, including extensive head injuries, when the Seat Leon crashed on South Street killing 20-year-old driver Sayeed Iqbal.

Two other teenagers, a boy and girl of 16, who were back-seat passengers, were injured, but their conditions are not life-threatening.

The 15-year-old this week remained in a critical condition at Leeds General Infirmary.

It is understood surgeons had to wait before carrying out the operation to reduce swelling on his brain.

The boy, who has not been named by police, was a pupil at South Craven School in Cross Hills until he left last summer.

Sunday’s incident, in which the car smashed into gates and a wall at Keighley Business Centre, occurred shortly after midnight on South Street.

It is being investigated by the West Yorkshire Police Major Collision Inquiry Team and is being overseen by the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

The morning after the incident, police initially refused to reveal anything about what had happened.

Then soon after noon the West Yorkshire Police communications unit released details of what they say happened in the lead-up to the incident.

A spokesman said: “A dark-coloured unmarked police Vauxhall motor vehicle was travelling along South Street, towards Haworth, when a black Seat Leon came to the attention of the officer driving it.

“The police vehicle began to follow the Seat, which entered the forecourt of the Jet filling station and performed a U-turn before travelling back along South Street towards Keighley town centre.

“The police vehicle followed the Seat, which failed to stop and made off at speed. It failed to negotiate a left-hand bend and collided with a wall and metal security gate outside Keighley Business Centre.

“The incident is being treated as a Fatal Road Traffic Collision Following a police pursuit, and is being investigated by West Yorkshire Police’s Professional Standards Department. The incident has also been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.”
