The countdown has begun to this year’s Keighley BigK 10k.

A celebratory gathering was held at the town’s new college campus to mark last year’s achievements and launch the 2011 event.

The 10k – a run or walk along a multi-terrain route, taking in Keighley’s major parks – forms the first part of a trio of events, the BigK3 series, in aid of Manorlands.

Mother’s Day, on April 3, is again the scheduled date for the 10k. The Bronte BigK CyKlesportive will follow in July and the BigK Bronte Bike Challenge in September.

Last year, the three events together raised over £33,000 for the Oxenhope Sue Ryder Care hospice.

The success was celebrated at the college gathering when awards were presented to mountain bikers Anne Sheffield and Danny Drake and a special T-shirt was given to Dick Ballentine, the first person to complete the BigK3 in a calendar year.

He received the shirt from John Dennis, of Sport Keighley, and Manorlands fundraiser Rachel Cunningham.

Mr Ballentine said: “I am very proud to be the first member of the BigK3 club and would encourage people of all abilities to get involved in these great local events.”

Entries for the BigK 10k are now open. Nearly 500 people took part in last year’s event and organisers hope that figure will be beaten this time. Every mum completing the course will receive a carnation.

Mr Dennis said women wishing to train for the run were welcome to attend Keighley & Craven Athletic Club’s ‘Begin Running’ sessions for all ages and abilities. Contact Richard Taylor on 07702 071779.

There are also other sessions for potential participants.
