Practising what they preach are these health champions from the Sangat Community Centre in Keighley.

The elders from the Lawkholme and Eastwood areas of Keighley are tucking into a healthy curry lunch.

Diet and nutrition is just one of the health-related subjects the men have been learning about in recent weeks.

They will pass on their new knowledge to family, friends and other people in Keighley’s Asian community.

Some will become “Super Champions” organising their own activities for groups of people and leading health workshops.

Groups of men and women at the Sangat Centre are being trained as champions by the NHS’s Seniors Show The Way initiative.

They are among 700 volunteers across Bradford and Airedale who have learned about subjects like healthy eating, diabetes and blood pressure.

Arfan Ali, who leads the Sangat training, said that drop-ins for older people from ethnic minorities were traditionally only social groups.

The aim with such groups is now to introduce more information sessions and get members involved with projects.

Mr Ali said many of the members themselves suffered from ailments like diabetes or heart disease. He said: “We wanted someone to come in who could speak their own language. Using translators loses the essence of the message.

“It’s a tailored package to every community in their own language.”

The health champions focus on physical activity, mental health and relaxation.
