Steeton Primary School pupils have been digging into the village’s past.
Children in years three and four carried out an archaeological dig after being told the site manager had discovered an old helmet while working in the school’s wild area.
Further objects uncovered included combs, coins, oil lamps, a child’s shoe, brooches, a wooden knife and bones.
The pupils washed, bagged and classified all the items and researched them using books and the Internet.
The project formed part of an ongoing study of the Anglo-Saxons, related to Steeton.
All the “artefacts” will be displayed museum-style for other classes and parents to see. There will be a special Easter assembly and the venture will culminate with an Anglo-Saxon feast for which the children will plan and make their own food and costumes.
