A 37-year-old woman jailed for masterminding a burglary at her sister’s home has been ordered to pay back almost £20,000.
Shabana Ismail was led sobbing to jail in September last year when she was locked up for 28 days.
Ismail, a mother-of-two, of Worth Avenue, Stockbridge, Keighley, returned to Bradford Crown Court yesterday for a Proceeds of Crime Application hearing.
Judge Peter Benson was told the benefit from Ismail’s crime was £19,858 and her available assets were £37,175. He made a confiscation order in the sum of the benefit figure.
She pleaded guilty to stealing jewellery and other property valued at £23,558 by staging a burglary at her sister Shabnan’s home in Granby Drive, Riddlesden, on January 9, 2009, and had recruited a teenage girl to help.
After she was arrested, Ismail tried to blame the teenager and a woman friend for the crime.
After the case, Detective Sergeant Dave Marston said: “This sends out a strong message that we can ensure burglary does not pay. The offender must repay the nearly £20,000 within six months or she will face a further custodial sentence.”
