During the late summer and autumn of 1940 the Keighley and District Spitfire-Hurricane Fund raised £11,600, which paid for both a Spitfire and a Hurricane and still left something over for the RAF Benevolent Fund.

Unlike the special money-raising weeks later in the war, which achieved much larger sums through investments, this was all given, the result of the whole community organising street concerts, garden parties, open-air gift stalls, miles of pennies and a plethora of collections.

Here, that October, are Ethel Fezzard and Winnie Brewer presenting a £50 cheque to Mayor J W Wardle on behalf of the work people and staff of C A Newsholme and Co Ltd, of Aireworth Shed.

The occasion was probably a fundraising dance, as there appears to be a band in the background.

That same week, Prince-Smith and Stell’s Ltd contributed £250, employees of Holmes, Laxton and Co £30 and an Oakworth house-to-house collection £90.16s.6d.

Mr Wardle had initiated the fund that August when he addressed a Town Hall meeting: “We in Keighley feel that we would like to have a hand and a share in paying our tribute to the splendid courage and efficiency of the RAF,” he said.
