A religious teacher who was caught on camera kicking and slapping children has been jailed for ten weeks.

Sabir Hussain, 60, admitted four charges of assaulting boys at the Markazi Jamia Mosque in Emily Street, Lawkholme, where he was teaching them the Koran. Hussain, of Spencer Street, Keighley, was arrested after secret filming was screened on Channel 4 earlier this year.

After the sentencing Keighley MP Kris Hopkins said he was very disappointed at what he regards as a “grossly lenient sentence” given the seriousness of the crimes committed. He said: “I have written to the Justice Secretary and the Attorney General to make my feelings known. Together with the physical assaults themselves, this individual was guilty of an outrageous breach of trust and this should be reflected in the time he spends behind bars.Instead, he is likely to be back on our streets in a month. It is simply not good enough and I believe the sentencing policy for these offences should now be re-examined as a matter of considerable urgency.” Full court report and othjer reaction in this week’s Keighley News
