Housing workers have joined forces with a community to build an outdoor play area at a school.

The Incommunities volunteers gave up part of their weekend to help school staff, governors and parents with the project at Aire View Infant School in Silsden.

The team constructed a climbing wall, fitted a rope monkey bar with log balance beams, built a sandpit and fitted storage containers for bikes and tricycles. A pretend barbecue play area was also created.

Several companies, including Naylor Myers builders merchants, Aire Valley Tree Services and Castle Tyres, donated materials.

Among the volunteers was Toby Heslop, from Incommunities human resources. He said: “When the idea was put to us we quickly got together a keen group of volunteer staff, from trade operatives to trainers.

“It was like a TV challenge to create the outdoor children’s space in one day. But it was definitely worth all the effort to create something which will be enjoyed by pupils for years to come.”

Jez Lester, Incommunities assistant chief executive for asset management, said: “At Incommunities staff really embrace volunteering work and have a long track record of helping local schools, from taking part in outdoor team challenges to giving one-to-one classroom support. Everyone can be very proud of the end result.”

Vicky Bottomley, headteacher at Aire View Infant School, said: “Well done to everyone from Incommunities, along with parents and governors who all gave their valuable time to create this outdoor resource.

“Everyone worked like troupers and showed a tremendous real team spirit. What an amazing achievement – and all in one day.”
