Steeton Cricket Club is bowled over with its latest delivery.

It has received a £27,540 grant from WREN to help fund the replacement of the clubhouse roof.

The club’s vice-chairman, Jonathan Best, said he was “over the moon” with the award.

“Currently water leaks into the clubhouse and it is affecting not only us but the community groups that use the building,” he said.

“We have lived with the problem for two years but it is bringing down the internal ceiling and we keep having to patch it up.”

He said the roof replacement was part of a wider scheme of improvements at the club, which has seen massive membership growth in recent years.

There are three senior teams and five junior sides and the Aire Valley Angels girls team also uses the facilities.

“We have outgrown the current building and are hoping for funding from Sport England towards the cost of extending our changing provision,” said Mr Best.

Other funding to help with the roof work has come from Yorwaste and an £8,000 grant was given by the Big Lottery Fund Awards for All programme to buy a new septic tank.

WREN is a not-for-profit business which awards grants to community, environment and heritage projects.
