Our challenge went out last week, in the wake of thousands turning out to see the Olympic Torch pass through the town, to build on the community spirit which was clear to see.

This weekend sees a fantastic chance to build on that legacy by offering support to a whole host of events being staged throughout the area.

There’s Keighley Gala, Keighley Festival, Manorlands Garden Party, and galas at Oakworth, Denholme and East Morton. We would urge all those who can to make a pledge to go to at least one of them. They need your support.

The revitalised Keighley Festival is billed as the greatest show Keighley has ever seen. More than 50 events and activities will run from tomorrow to next Friday.

The festival – the Keighley Festival of Arts, Sport, Music and Dance – has been made possible due to a grant of £14,000 from Bradford Council. This well-spent money has enabled organisers to give grants to groups enabling them to stage activities.

This new-look celebration will feature only local talent. As festival leading light Malcolm Hanson says, the stars are Keighley people – making it a true community event.

As with the majority of such events they would not happen without a small group of people who give their time and energy, and often put their hands in their pockets, to make sure they go ahead. They don’t seek any reward – to spread a little happiness and raise money for local funds and charities is enough for them.

We can say ‘thank you’ to them by attending. Let’s make all these occasions part of the local Olympic legacy.
