GEORGE JARVIS Airedale Church writes

On June 24, Keighley experienced an historic, possibly never-to-be-repeated, event when a reported 20,000 of its townsfolk turned out to see the Olympic Torch, passing through the town on its journey to the Olympic Games in London.

The sun shone, there was an atmosphere of celebration, and many people experienced a time of joy as a little flame of light passed through the streets of Keighley.

It goes without saying that, for many who were there, the good feeling will have rapidly dissipated.

However, there is a light that continues to shine in Keighley, this is the light of the life of Jesus in the hearts of those who own him as Lord and Saviour.

I was 20 years old in 1960 when this light first shone into my life. I was working as a metallurgical apprentice and studying for a degree in Chemistry. Then, one day, Jesus shone his light into my heart. That light has continued to shine within me since that November day 52 years ago. I was so blessed by the passage of the Olympic Torch through our town, but that blessing pales into insignificance compared with what comes from the light of Jesus within me.

Many will have noted that in the thick of the town’s celebrations on June 24, the Christians of the churches of Keighley contributed significantly to the general goodwill around. It is because of the living light of Jesus within them they so enjoy blessing Keighley in this way.
