Keighley schoolchildren were among more than 10,000 from across the district who filled Odsal Stadium at Bradford for a dance and sport extravaganza celebrating the 2012 Olympic Games.

Shaking their limbs to a lively Latin-inspired beat, 4,000 of them managed to set a new world record for the most pupils taking part in a Zumba dance routine on the pitch.

The Bradford District Schools Sports and Cultural Olympiad, run by the Bradford Bulls Foundation and Bradford Council, involved more than half the district’s schools and included a massive parade with Olympic-themed banners.

It was followed up with a series of daily sports and cultural events at the stadium, including a sport carousel, involving more than 1,000 children.

Kath Tunstall, the Council’s strategic director of children’s services, said the event “encapsulated the Olympic spirit”.

For Deana Morgan from Zumba Bradford, who co-choreographed the Zumba routine and devised a training pack for schools, the response has been overwhelming.

“The feedback has been amazing,” she said.

“We trained teachers to teach the routine in schools and they’ve been rehearsing since Easter. Seeing more than 4,000 children on the pitch was fantastic. We’ve had children saying ‘we want to do more Zumba’ and teachers are talking about getting us into schools.

“It’s fun, it’s easy, it’s ‘exercise in disguise – when they’re dancing children don’t realise how hard they’re working, in terms of boosting their respiratory system.”
