Coroner rules woman, 69, died from natural causes

An inquest that was earlier adjourned because of family concerns about a pensioner’s hospital treatment has concluded 69-year-old Mary Tubman died from natural causes.

Mrs Tubman, who lived at Denby Road, Keighley, had gone to Airedale Hospital in July 2010 with leg pain, but died a week later at Bradford Royal Infirmary.

Friday’s inquest heard how her condition had started to improve while at Airedale, but then she started with other symptoms, which suggested she was bleeding from a gastric ulcer. She underwent successful surgery, but again deteriorated and was transferred to Bradford Royal Infirmary. But Mrs Tubman never recovered and died from heart failure.

Pathologist Dr Alan Padwell said Mrs Tubman’s heart was diseased and she had chronic obstructive airways disease affecting her lungs. The loss of blood would have put a bigger strain on her heart, which ultimately caused it to stop.

Assistant deputy Bradford coroner Professor Paul Marks recorded Mrs Tubman’s death was from natural causes, finding she had been diagnosed and treated promptly and appropriately assessed in hospital.
