Ramadan food safety warning issued

A Keighley health centre is encouraging people to fast safely during Ramadan.

One Medicare@North Street has issued the advice ahead of the start tomorrow of the Islamic month of fasting.

The surgery is particularly aiming its message at people with diabetes and other conditions.

Operations manager Rachael Pengelly said: “We understand that Ramadan is an extremely important religious time for many of our patients and people in the local community. Some people with medical conditions fast during Ramadan without always understanding the long-term implications to their health, so we want to support these patients to complete this period of spiritual reflection safely.

“If patients are taking any medication such as tablets or insulin to control diabetes, we would like them to consult their doctor to see if their dose can be adjusted for them to fast more safely during Ramadan. In all cases of Muslim diabetics fasting, they should closely monitor their blood sugar levels especially before and after meals.”
