Crowds flock to busiest gala ever

Cullingworth Gala was a huge success – despite a late change of venue.

The event was switched from the village recreation ground, which was soaked following the weeks of heavy rain, to Parkside School.

But villagers still turned out in their numbers to support Sunday’s extravaganza.

“It was probably the busiest it’s ever been!” said gala chairman Leonie Padgett. “It was absolutely brilliant.

“We would like to thank everyone who gave their support and a special thank you to Parkside School for allowing the use of its grounds at short notice.”

The gala began with a procession from Station Road, which included the Imperial Crusaders marching band, Gala Queen Kathryn McCarter and attendants Ella Stephenson and Emmy Moorby together with the retiring retinue, Scout and Brownie groups, CADS, the pre-school and a penny trailer.

There was a ‘Great British’ theme, in celebration of the Olympics and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

Activities at the Parkside School site included entertainment from the primary school choir plus Samba and rock bands.

Among the other attractions were the crowning of the Gala Queen, a balloon release, dog show, stalls, games, bouncy castles, a climbing wall and a cave bus.
